Our Approach · Contextual Density

The science of cannabis SEO

We don't guess at rankings — we engineer them. Every page we build for a cannabis brand is measured against the pages that already win, then designed to cover the topic more completely. Here's exactly how, and why it works.

SEO is engineering, not fortune-telling

In cannabis, you can't buy your way to the top. Paid ads are banned across Google and Meta, the category is held to strict YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) standards, and industry stigma makes authority genuinely hard to earn. That combination punishes guesswork. So we treat search engine optimization the way it should be treated — as an engineering discipline, where every recommendation rests on a measurement, not an opinion.

The method behind CannabisSEO.ai is Contextual Density, developed by our founder Éric St-Cyr through years of testing Google's algorithm across the web's most competitive markets. It's the same methodology that powers every one of our cannabis SEO services — and it's measurable, page by page.

First, how Google actually reads your cannabis site

Picture your website as a library. Google doesn't read the whole library at once — it reads one book at a time. Each page is a book, and each book is about one subject: your core keyword.

When you look for a book, you scan the spines. That spine is your title tag — it has to match what the searcher wants and contain the keyword. You pull the book and read the cover: that's your H1. One book, one cover; one page, one H1, one core keyword. Then you skim the table of contents to decide if it's worth reading — those are your H2s, the roadmap of the page. If the headings don't add up to a coherent, complete answer, the page won't rank. For a dispensary page, that means the spine says "Dispensary SEO," the cover says it again, and the chapters cover the local pack, Google Business Profile, reviews and citations — the way a genuinely authoritative page would.

Contextual Density: the factor that decides who ranks

Here's the core idea: Google counts; it doesn't read. It can't understand meaning the way you do, so it approximates quality with things it can measure — how thoroughly a page covers its topic through relevant terms. Contextual Density captures exactly that:

Contextual Density = (keyword variations + relevant entities + relevant LSI terms) ÷ (total words − stop words) × 100

In plain terms: what share of your real content is made of terms that genuinely belong to your topic's semantic field. This is not keyword density. It's not about repeating "cannabis SEO" twenty times. It's about the breadth of related entities (Google Business Profile, Weedmaps, Leafly, ChatGPT, schema markup, E-E-A-T, Delta-8) and supporting terms that a true expert would naturally use — packed efficiently, without filler.

The part most agencies skip: we measure it

Anyone can claim their content is "high quality." We prove it. For every target keyword, we script the contextual density and real word count of the pages currently ranking for it — the actual competitors, measured with the same method and the same term list we'll use on your page. Then we engineer your page to cover the topic roughly ten percent more thoroughly than that benchmark, while staying readable and genuinely useful.

It's a measurable bar, not a promise. A page can beat a competitor on density and still be half its depth — so we check both. That discipline is why we can tell you, before we start, exactly what "winning" this keyword requires.

Breadth and precision — no fluff

Early on, the theory was simple: pack in as many contextual words as possible. Testing proved it wrong. A 5,000-word article stuffed with vocabulary can still lose to a shorter, tighter page from a site of similar authority. The breakthrough was density — the ratio of relevant terms to total words. Fluff dilutes your quality signals; every unnecessary sentence lowers your density. So we maximize coverage and minimize bloat at the same time: the most complete answer, in the fewest wasted words.

Why density wins in cannabis specifically

Three forces make this method especially powerful for cannabis brands:

  • Ads are off the table. With paid channels closed, organic rankings are the most defensible growth asset you own — and density is what earns them.
  • Cannabis is YMYL. Google applies stricter expertise and trust standards, and semantic richness is how a page demonstrates real authority rather than thin, spun content that gets flagged.
  • AI engines run on the same signals. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite well-structured, entity-rich, densely relevant content. The same work that lifts your Google rankings makes you the brand the model names — the heart of our AI search optimization.

What about backlinks?

Links still matter — but the game shifted from quantity to authority, and contextual density decides link value too. A backlink from a page that's itself dense and on-topic around your keyword passes far more weight than a generic link from an unrelated site. So our cannabis link building chases relevance and topical authority, not raw volume — the durable, penalty-safe kind Google actually rewards.

Density needs a sound foundation

Great content can't rank on a broken site. Our method sits on top of solid technical SEO — crawlability, Core Web Vitals, clean architecture, schema markup and fast server response — and, for dispensaries and delivery brands, disciplined local SEO. Content, links and technical work reinforce each other; we run them as one system, powered by content built to the density standard.

What we promise — and what we don't

We never promise the number-one position; nobody controls Google's algorithm, and anyone who guarantees it is lying. What we promise is a method: benchmarked competitive analysis, pages engineered to a measurable density target, transparent reporting on rankings and organic traffic, and no long-term contracts. Our clients stay because the results convince them.
